ALGARVE

Proceed now to Sagres, an impressive and arid world’s end, called by the Romans Sacred Promontory, chosen by Prince Henry the Navigator as a base from where sailed the caravels to the great Sea Discoveries. In our tour we shall visit the fortress and stop by the marine caves on the edge of the cliff. Return to the pier of Portimão.

SILVES and THE ARABIC HERITAGE

 (3 1/2 HOURS TOUR)

After a short drive from Portimão we arrive at Silves; the former Moorish capital of the Algarve. Our city visit includes: the Moorish Castle with its huge red limestone walls, the restored Arab cistern, the gothic Cathedral & the cross of Portugal. Besides can be added upon request a visit to the cork factory/museum.

The tour will continue to Monchique, a volcanic peak that rises to ca. 900 meters, a stop will be made at Foia, a summit point from where you can enjoy the most beautiful panorama of Algarve: small bare ridges to the north, wooded hill fields to the west and to the south the coast line of Lagos and Portimão with the ocean in the far distance. Return to the pier of Portimão, but not without first having caught a glimpse of the beautiful Praia da Rocha (the cliff beach) from Santa Catarina Fort.
