Manueline is a particularly rich and sumptuous style of architectural ornamentation indigenous to Portugal in the early 16th century. The name manueline derives from king Manuel in whose reign this style developed and thrived although the name manueline only appeared in the late 19th century given by an art critic.

This style based on Portuguese late gothic was much influenced by Moorish and Indian dense decorations, which the Portuguese during their voyages of discoveries took inspiration from. Moreover there is a profusion of nautical and sea motifs such as anchors, ropes, shells, seaweed and coral, celebrating the sea trade upon which the Portuguese wealth was based.

Leave for Óbidos a medieval village surrounded by its ancient walls considered one of loveliest villages of this country. Thence Alcobaça that keeps the royal tombs of King Pedro I and his lover Inês, the tragic “love story” inspiration of poets and playwriters .

A typical lunch will be served in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, your attention will be drawn to monastery of Batalha, perhaps the masterpiece of gothic and manueline art in Portugal , classified World Heritage by UNESCO).

You will spend the night in Nazare, reputed Portugal’s the most typical fishing village, rediscovered in recent years by surfer lovers on account of its tubes and gigantic waves that can reach more than 20 meters high.

On this day you will out for the day as there is a lot to be seen: Coimbra, an important artistic city that boasts one of the oldest Universities in Europe having been founded in 1291. Visit of the University Renaissance building, its awesome baroque Library and the manueline tombs of the first Portuguese kings in Santa Cruz Church.

After a short stop at Fátima (optional) we arrive at Tomar to visit the templar Knights Convent (World Heritage) where the Manueline window of the chapter Room is considered the masterpiece of Manueline art.

Lunch on your own. In the afternoon drive on Èvora (here the entir old town was classified World Heritage by UNESCO ).

 You will be stunned by the whitewashed old houses, its dozens of convents and churches and narrow Moorish streets. One hour walking tour covering the Roman temple and the Gothic Cathedral.

Enjoy charm of Évora in the early morning on your own before leaving for Setúbal to visit the interior of church-Convent of Jesus of which is said to be one of the finest examples of manueline delicate architecture.

On the way to Lisbon you will cross the Natural park of Arrábida with superb views over the sea and cliffs covered by luxurious Mediterranean vegetation.

A full day dedicated to the main manueline monuments both of them classified as World Heritage by UNESCO – : Jerónimos Monastery and the tower of Belém the extravaganza fortress built on the bank of river Tagus that has become the very symbol of this city.

Besides that you will visit the the old quarter of Alfama culminating your tour in the grounds of castle S. Jorge from where one can enjoy breathtaking views over the old city and the river.

The last dinner will be served in a local restaurant where you will have the opportunity to taste the truly flavours of Lisbon cuisine and to listen to fado singing.
